Start by determining the total weight of the engine and any attached components you intend to lift. Then compare that weight with the crane's rated capacity at the boom position you plan to use. A 2-ton shop crane may have a lower allowable capacity when its boom is extended. We recommend checking the product's load ratings, lifting height, and reach before choosing a model.

A shop crane, also called an engine hoist or cherry picker, is used to lift and position an engine during removal or installation. An engine stand supports a detached engine during inspection, maintenance, or rebuilding. They serve different purposes, and an engine stand is not a substitute for a lifting crane. Our shop crane collection includes both equipment types, so check the product description before ordering.

Several engine hoists in our shop crane collection feature folding designs intended to reduce their storage footprint. However, folding mechanisms, dimensions, and storage requirements vary by model. Check the individual product's specifications to confirm how it folds and whether the stored dimensions suit your garage or workshop.

A suitable shop crane may be used for other lifting tasks when the load, lifting arrangement, and working conditions fall within the manufacturer's instructions and rated limits. Before lifting, verify the load weight, approved attachment points, required reach, and equipment capacity. Never assume that a crane is suitable for every component simply because its advertised maximum capacity exceeds the load weight.

Before the first lift, review the product's assembly and operating instructions. Confirm that the crane is assembled correctly and inspect its hydraulic components, fasteners, wheels, hook, and lifting chain for visible problems. Verify the rated capacity at your intended boom position and use the crane only on a suitable surface. If anything appears damaged or operates abnormally, do not use the equipment until the issue has been resolved.
