John Deere 35G Excavator Repair Guide Part 1: Engine Problems

John Deere 35G Excavator Repair Guide Part 1: Engine Problems

Within our comprehensive guide, you'll discover a treasure trove of potential problems, ranging from the simplest and most common to the rarest and most challenging to diagnose.

Engine Cranks But Won’t Start Or Hard To Start

Is your engine refusing to start or giving you a hard time starting? Fear not, we've got you covered with some expert tips to get your engine up and running smoothly. Follow these steps to diagnose and solve the problem:

  1. Check the Fuel Tank: First things first, ensure that your fuel tank isn't empty. It may seem obvious, but it's always worth double-checking. If the tank is low on fuel, fill it up to the recommended level.
  1. Verify the Fuel Type: Sometimes, using the incorrect fuel type can cause starting issues, especially when transitioning between winter and summer blends. If you suspect this might be the case, drain the fuel tank and refill it with the appropriate blend to resolve the problem.
  1. Bleeding the Air: Air can enter the fuel system through leaks, repairs, or other factors, negatively impacting engine performance. To resolve this, you need to bleed the air out of the system. Follow these steps:
  • Ensure the fuel tank is full
  • Confirm that the fuel shutoff valve is open.
  • Turn the key switch to the ON position for 10 – 15 seconds. This will activate the electric fuel solenoid pump to bleed the air.
  • Wait for 30 seconds before attempting to start the engine.
  • Start the engine and carefully inspect the fuel supply system for any leaks. If the engine doesn't start, repeat the procedure.
  1. Check the Fuel Filter: A clogged fuel filter can restrict fuel flow to the engine, leading to performance issues. If you suspect a clogged filter, either replace it or verify that it has been correctly installed.
  • A clogged fuel filter may appear darker due to the accumulation of contaminants and debris.
  • Look for stains or wet spots on the outside of the filter, particularly around the connections where fuel enters and exits.
  • In some cases, a strong odor may emanate from the filter.
  1. Inspect the Air Filters: Dirty air filters can also hinder engine performance. Take a look at your air filters and replace them if necessary.
  1. Primary Fuel and Water Filter Separator: Examine the primary fuel and water filter separator. If the engine problem persists, consider the following possibilities:
  • The installation might not have been done correctly.
  • The filter may not have been primed after installation. To ensure a proper installation, we recommend changing the O-ring every time you replace the fuel filter. Priming the fuel system involves filling the separator with fuel and removing any trapped air or water from the filter system before operating the equipment. To prime the fuel system:
  • Turn the ignition on for approximately 30 seconds without starting the engine.
  • Turn the ignition off and crank the engine for 15 seconds.
  • If the engine still doesn't start, repeat the first step.
  1. Electrical Connections and Battery: If your engine cranks slowly, it could indicate poor electrical connections or a low battery. Try the following steps:
  • Clean and tighten the battery and starter connections.
  • Charge the battery.
  • If the issue persists, consider replacing the battery.
  1. Engine Oil Viscosity: Lastly, ensure that your engine oil has the correct viscosity. If not, drain the crankcase and refill it with the appropriate oil.

Engine oil viscosity is crucial for cold starts. Using oil with the wrong viscosity can result in it being too thick or too thin at low temperatures, making it difficult to start the engine. Cold starts may be slower, and the engine may not run smoothly until it warms up.

By following these detailed steps, you'll be able to diagnose and resolve most engine cranking issues. Get ready to rev up that engine and hit the road with confidence!

Engine Won't Crank

Follow these guidelines carefully to get your engine up and running smoothly again.

  1. Clean Battery Terminals and Connections: Start by cleaning the battery terminals and connections. Over time, these components can accumulate dirt and corrosion, leading to poor electrical conductivity. Use a battery terminal cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water to remove any build-up. Ensure that the connections are tight and secure.
  1. Check for Loose Connections: In addition to cleaning the battery terminals, inspect all the connections in your engine system for any signs of looseness. Loose connections can disrupt the flow of electrical current and prevent the engine from cranking. Tighten any loose connections to ensure a secure electrical connection.
  1. Inspect the Fuses: Take a look at the following fuses to make sure they are intact and functioning properly:
  • Main relay 10 amp fuse (F4)
  • Start 5 amp fuse (F6)
  •  Engine 5 amp fuse (F16)
  • Pilot shut off 5 amp fuse (F17)
  • Engine Control Unit 30 amp fuse (F63)

To access the fuse panel, locate the right control lever and remove the cover. Inspect each fuse visually, and if any are blown or damaged, replace them with fuses of the same rating.

      1. Check Battery Level: If all the above steps have been followed and the engine still doesn't crank, it may be due to a low battery level. Check the battery voltage using a multimeter. If the voltage is below the recommended level, you will need to either charge the battery or replace it with a new one.

Engine Knocks, Runs Irregularly, Or Stops

If your engine is acting up - knocking, running irregularly, or even stopping - we've got the solutions for you!

First things first, clogged air and fuel filters can be a culprit. Simply replace them and give the fuel tank inlet screen a good cleaning.

If your fuel filter doesn't look too dirty, reinstall it properly with the O-ring seal in place.

Next, check for any air in the system. You already know how to bleed the air from the previous section.

Don't forget to inspect the engine oil level.

Low oil can cause excessive friction and affect performance. Low-quality fuel can also be a performance killer. To tackle this, drain the fuel tank, change the primary fuel filter and water separator, bleed the air, add fresh fuel, and clean the fuel tank inlet screen. And remember, prime the system before starting up the excavator.

      Engine Not Developing Full Power

If you notice that your John Deere 35G's engine is not reaching its full power potential, there are a few steps you can take to diagnose and resolve the issue:

      1. Check the Idle RPM: When the engine is warm, the idle RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) should be between approximately 1,300 and 1,350 RPM. If the idle RPM is consistently below 1,300, ensure that the engine speed dial is in the high position.
      1. Release Hydraulic Functions: Sometimes, operating the hydraulic functions can interfere with the engine's idle. To rectify this, release all hydraulic functions for 10 seconds and observe if the idle stabilizes.
      1. Fuel and Air Filters: It is essential to regularly inspect and replace the fuel and air filters as needed. If you haven't already done so, check if the filters require replacement. Additionally, ensure that any air trapped in the fuel system is bled properly.
      1. Fuel Type and Contamination: Using the incorrect fuel type can prevent the engine from developing full power. If you suspect fuel contamination, drain the fuel tank, replace the primary fuel filter and water separator, bleed any trapped air, and refill with clean fuel.
      1. Authorized Dealer Assistance: If you have followed the above steps and the problem persists, it is advisable to contact your authorized dealer. They will be able to diagnose and resolve any potential hydraulic issues, restricted exhaust system problems, or engine wear that may be affecting the engine's performance.

Engine Emits Excessive Black Exhaust Smoke

      Here's what you can do:

      1. Check your fuel type. Make sure you're using the right one. If not, drain and refill.
      1. Look for any restrictions or dirt in the air intake or exhaust system. If you find a cracked or damaged exhaust system, reach out to your authorized dealer.
      1. Verify if the thermostat is functioning properly. When the thermostat gets stuck open, the coolant keeps flowing through the radiator, keeping the engine temperature low. To compensate, the engine control unit (ECU) increases fuel in the cylinders, causing incomplete combustion and resulting in black or gray smoke in the exhaust.
